Trucks
The average tractor-trailer, fully loaded, weighs between 35 and 40 tons. That's up to 80,000 pounds of metal and load barreling down the highway. Many of these trucks are company-owned and are governed so they cannot exceed a fixed rate of speed - some at 60, and some at 65. Because of this enormous weight, it takes a truck MUCH longer to stop than a 1-ton car or pickup. Even if it's just a tractor bobtailing home, that tractor still weighs about 13,000 pounds - still a whole lot more than the average sedan - and it's still going to require more road in which to stop. When driving, especially in inclement weather such as ice and snow, please, please remember that those trucks are just as likely to slide as you are, and give them a wide berth. Don't try to speed past them, because it can put you in a dangerous situation. Also, even in GOOD weather, NEVER, ever "squeeze" in front of a truck. Experienced truck drivers always maintain a minimum safe distance between themselves and the vehicle in front of them, and if you jump into that space, you're putting yourself at risk. Many times, people will shoot into a space in front of a big truck, and the driver can't even see them over the hood. This is an extremely dangerous place to be! Most truck drivers are responsible, safe drivers. But they need YOU, the average motorist, to stop risking your own lives and theirs by failing to acknowledge the limitations of a big truck. Be smart, and be safe. Thank you, from the wife of a truck driver who risked his own life today to rescue a woman who thought her vehicle was tougher than an icy road and flipped it. |
